Our “Best” Marijuana Canisters

Canisters with a designation of “Best” have at least one of the following criteria. In some very rare cases the canister meets both criteria.

1) The canister is of significant historical value (i.e. the first or last canisters Robert received), or

2) the canister is in excellent physical condition (i.e. very little discoloration).

A Best Canister.

This canister (left and below) has excellent coloration and an extremely clear assay label. Additionally, this canister is one of the last Robert received before his death in 2001. The photos below show the RX label date January 19, 2001. At this period in time, to facilitate matters with regard to shipment and storage of the marijuana, the government allowed Robert to receive four canisters at a time. Hence the odd notation of the label, “Vial 4 of 4”.

This would be the last shipment Robert received. He continued smoking the government’s marijuana until shortly before his death on June 2, 2001.

Another Best Canister

This is another canister rated “Best”. In this case the tin is the first tin of marijuana cigarettes that Robert received. It was given to him directly by his doctor, who was packing up to move to another university after treating Robert for a little more than a year. The physician knew Robert needed marijuana to treat his glaucoma and helped Robert find another ophthalmologist but the U.S. government initially refused to grant the new doctor permission. The government dragged its feet for nearly five months at which point Robert’s attorneys filed Randall v. U.S. This case led directly to the Medical Marijuana Compassionate Use Program which would figure prominently in the years ahead.

There is no prescription label on this tin, just the assay label noting a production date of October 1, 1976. Later assay labels would include the potency of the marijuana but in the relatively simpler times of the mid-1970s the science was simpler and the cigarettes are simply noted as ”High Potency.”
